TAO is the token of Bittensor. Bittensor is an open network of independent subnets that produce digital commodities such as compute, inference, storage and prediction. Per Bittensor's docs the chain pays participants in TAO based on the value they add. Miners produce and validators score them. Subnet creators set the incentives and stakers back validators with TAO.

As of October 2026 the TAO perp trades on Hyperliquid at up to 5x and on Lighter. Hyperliquid's maintenance margin at 5x is 10%. That is eight times BTC's.
